Anyone who attended last week’s Easter Masses might not be able to tell that our current pipe organ is in very very poor condition, but that is the case! Just before Christmas 2017, parts of the organ were flooded by a leak in a radiator that sits just above it, yet the organ’s poor condition predates even that damage.
Last year the Parish called in several organ builders to examine the instrument, most notably the Casavant Brothers, who built our instrument, as well as Letourneau, another prominent builder. Both reports noted the most current water damage as well as other extensive water infiltration over the past many years. They also noted damaged and cracked wind chests, failed expression or volume controls on the organ, very questionable wiring conditions, some pipes that are in very poor condition, and cracks in the main wind line that supplies air to the entire instrument.
As you can see from the pictures below, we are literally keeping parts of the organ together with duct tape! What you may not realize is that members of our staff, namely Jason and Daniel, often find themselves climbing through the organ chambers to pull broken pipes, as they had to do just before Holy Thursday.
Back in 2016, before we fully understood the extent of the current damage to the organ, we did perform cleaning and maintenance work that has allowed the instrument to last even this long.
As you might remember, last year the Parish was able to acquire a beautiful digital organ, Marshall and Ogletree, Opus 1. This instrument was just removed from Trinity Church, Wall Street, where it served as a temporary organ after Trinity’s pipe organs were damaged during the attacks of 9/11. Trinity has finally completed their new pipe organs, and we now can enjoy this state of the art digital instrument that has been fully restored for us.
While I believe with my whole heart that our church deserves a Pipe Organ, executing a proper plan to restore or replace such an instrument is a large scale project that takes years to decide and plan. As that hopefully can happen for us, our Liturgical and prayer life as well as our ability to promote the arts must continue to be supported by a worthy instrument, which is why we have chosen to proceed at this time with the digital organ. I hope that you will join me in welcoming this new instrument into the Parish when it is finally installed just before the end of May.
