PAX CHRISTI METRO NEW YORK This Sunday’s readings remind us of the price of being counter-cultural, of choosing the unpopular way of being. In his encyclical, Laudato Si, Pope Francis refers to the “vision of ‘might is right” and says it “has engendered immense inequality, injustice and acts of violence against the majority of humanity, since resources end up in the hands of the first comer or the most powerful: the winner takes all.” Despite his great popularity, there are many who don’t like such messages from the Pope, but he continues: “Completely at odds with this model are the ideals of harmony, justice, fraternity and peace as proposed by Jesus” (par.82). As we celebrate UN International Peace Day on Monday and welcome Pope Francis to NYC later this week, let’s choose the ideals of Jesus and reject the popular culture of “might is right” no matter the cost.
“War destroys. And we must cry out for peace. Peace sometimes gives the idea of stillness, bu it is never stillness. It is always an active peace. I thing that everyone must be committed in the matter of peace, to do everything that they can, what I can do from here. Peace is the language we must speak.” Pope Francis.
