LENTEN SIMPLE SUPPERS

Prayers and meditation begin at 7PM in the dining room of the rectory, followed by a meal of soup and salad…and fellowship. The suppers are a wonderful way to not only deepen one’s Lenten experience, but also to be able to reflect in a very comfortable and quiet setting with fellow parishioners. For more information, please call Chris Williams at 304-337-1252 or [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you then.

Lenten film viewing
The Mission, a film that is perfect for Lent, will be shown on Saturday afternoon, April 13, at 2pm in the Rectory’s 2nd floor meeting room. Starring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, it is a mostly true story of the 18th century Jesuit mission to South America to convert the Guarnani natives to Christianity. It contains elements of worldly transgressions (slave trading, power, lust, revenge, hate) and one man’s attempt to change his life. This film, a Paulist Fathers production, received rave reviews and several awards and if you’ve never seen it, don’t miss this showing - it will enhance your Lenten experience. The movie is rated PG and is 21/2 hours long.

All Our Children, produced at The Sheen Center. This drama is set against a forgotten chapter of the Holocaust, the murder of disabled children and young people. Dr. Victor Franz faces a moral and ethical dilemma in his role as the head of a clinic for disabled children. A series of encounters cause him to question his actions, including one with Bishop von Galen, a real-life Catholic bishop who was outspoken in his opposition to the Nazis’ treatment of these young Germans. All Our Children is a timely work of historical fiction rooted firmly in the true evils of the past. You don't want to miss this show.
Group tickets can be purchased through Virginia Hill ($39 for previews, $49 for regular performances). There are also $80 reserved seats in the front row for those who request them.
Girls Scouts Gold Award
Annamarie Cross, a girl scout in the process of achieving her Gold Award, will be speaking at all the Masses this weekend. Annamarie is asking for dog/cat supplies to be donated for her project to help homeless pets. If you have any food, toys, or clean towels, please consider making a donation to her project by dropping them into the box in the rectory where they will be collected. If you have any questions, you can contact Annamarie via email @ [email protected].
In Sunday’s Gospel, a terrible thing has happened. The occupying Romans have killed several Galileans and mixed their blood with that of the Roman sacrifices, utterly disrespecting the slain people. Jesus’s reaction is to assure his audience that the victims of this massacre were no more sinful than anyone else. No one should consider him- or herself better or more worthy than another. Rather, all should strive to repent of their sins. Jesus then goes on to tell a story of a fig tree that isn’t bearing fruit. The fig tree represents leaders at the time, but could represent us today, as well. The Good News is that God, like the gardener in the story, is willing to give us another chance to become fruitful. God—and the gardener—are even set to cultivate the tree, unproductive leadership, or us with fertilizer to help us along. God, the great I AM, out of love and mercy offers us a land flowing with milk and honey despite our frailty. Let us remember we are a community of equals and commit to bearing much good fruit for one another as God intends.
